Moving out of Halls

Top Tips for Leaving Halls

We hope you have enjoyed your year in halls and looking forward to the next stage of university. We have put together some top tips and recommendations on leaving halls, packing and Student Support Services.

Read End of Session Information

First and foremost, you must read the End of Session email sent out last month for full details on departure date and time, reference requests, recycling, refuse and returning your keys.

Make a checklist

Organising transport, packing and cleaning can't be done all in one day and to avoid departure being an overwhelming experience, we recommend making a checklist and you can tick jobs off as you go. Seeing tasks being completed and scored off the list will make you feel more at ease and you can enjoy the remaining weeks in halls, stress free.

Check your Inventory

Check the halls inventory to make sure all of the items provided by halls in your bedroom and in the communal kitchen and living area are still there and in good condition. If you have any issues regarding this, please do reach out to the accommodation team. An example of your checklist may look like;

  • Cleaning - bedroom, wash room, kitchen (with each room having its own tick)
  • Check Inventory
  • Handover keys
  • Pack: laptop, items under bed, clothes, kitchenware etc.

Sort Items for Disposal/Donation: Refuge, Donation and Recycle

Please see End of Session email regarding refuge and recycling.

Plan/Book Your Travel

Remember to either;

  • Book a courier to transport your belongings
  • Arrange for family, carers or friends to help transport your belongings
  • Research local storage companies online if you don't require certain items until next session
  • If you are travelling on public transport, be realistic about how much you can carry and consider the above points

Plan for next session

As you depart from halls you will have to begin the search for housing in the private sector, either from a letting agent, private landlord or purpose built private student housing. We would recommend researching available flats and housing options online.

If you require any help with this, Student Support Services hold regular information Zooms sessions, drop-in sessions and flat hunting guides, available via the Student Support Services GSA Intranet page.

Should you have any questions or concerns regarding your departure or if you require to extend your stay, please contact the accommodation office at accommodation@gsa.ac.uk for availability and any other queries. Please note no extensions are available at Margaret Macdonald House, but there may be the option of booking a room at Blythswood House for an extended period.

We wish you the best of luck in the future and have a great summer!
